What is a phobia?
A phobia is an anxiety disorder triggered by the overwhelming fear of an object, feeling, place, situation or animal. This can usually be divided into two categories; simple or complex. Phobias are similar to fears but they are much more extreme. The key difference is that the anxiety felt tends to interfere with your quality of life and ability to function. A phobia usually lasts for more than 6 months and is out of proportion to the danger or threat.
What causes a phobia?
Phobias usually do not have a single cause and there tend to be many associated factors. Some of the most common causes include:
- Personal trauma
- Witnessing the trauma of others
- Learned response from others
- Genetics
